How I Travel : Buyer at ICONIC - Carolyn Donohue
Many would consider it a dream job. Carolyn has spent her working career surrounded by luxury shoes, bags and accessories in the showrooms of international brands. New York, Milan, Paris - you name it, she's been there...alot. As well as accumulating a killer wardrobe, millions of frequent flyer points, the frequent world travel has meant she's become an expert on packing, airport chic and international travel. Here are her tips!
Most of us have an idea of what it's like to work in Fashion, but what's the reality?
It’s fun, full of people from all walks of life which I love. In my view, the industry is all about relationships. With colleagues, vendors and customers.
In Buying and Merchandising there is the overseas Travel, which is great but you need stamina and passion to allow it to be a priority, over life at home.
When it comes to the day to day, I have to reveal, it’s like most office jobs, emails, excel and meetings!
What is one destination that you're not rushing back to?
Rarotonga, sorry Cook Islands! It’s BEAUTIFUL, but my favourite destinations have great people and food. Unfortunately the food was lacking in Raro.
How many international cities have you visited this year so far?
So far this year I’ve been to about 8...London, Manchester, Paris, LA, Aspen, New York, Washington DC & Fiji. Not all for work! In February they mostly delivered snow, in June we got beautiful sun!
This week Milan, Hong Kong and Dongguan in China get a look in!
A very generous stranger gives you a plane ticket to any destination in the world - where are you going and why?
I’d take a First Class return to London!
From there I could visit all the places in Europe I’ve never been and return to my favourites. I’m dying to see the coastline of Croatia and experience Istanbul. I’d love to eat my way around Provence again, simply for the best tasting fresh food I’ve ever eaten.
Aside from the basics (passport, suitcase etc) what three items are must-bring things for you when you travel?
- A face mist, my lovely friend Bec recently introduced me to Caudalíe Eau de beaute it’s heavenly!
- Gym gear, you WILL use it
- Stain remover and washing soap - for dining emergencies!
You’ve got 24 hrs to spend in New York, what are you going to do?
- Walk, everywhere!
- Talk, to everyone. New Yorkers love a chat!
- Stay in Soho and have brekkie at Balthazar
- Pop up to MoMa and The Frick, then go on to Barney’s and Bergdorfs for a quick lap of shopping
- Eat some crab cakes for lunch at Fred’s at Barneys and be sure to have a reservation for dinner, at a new, but recommended restaurant. There’s always somewhere new opening up!
- In the summer I love a pre-dinner drink on a rooftop, to take in the city! In the winter a bar in the West Village is a cosy option
Now it’s time for the quick fire…
Aisle, middle or window seat?
Do you roll, fold or stuff?
Fold and roll combo
Last minute or a week in advance packing?
Laying out begins a week out, actual select and pack the day before
Bucket list destination?
A safari in Africa, the Serengeti is probably the number one option
Go-to travel/plane outfit?
Comfy pants, stretchy cotton or silk, usually drop crotch which for some reason the US scanners don’t like!?
With a singlet or tee and my giant wrap, which is like a blanket and I have decided matches everything...others may disagree
